Everything you need to know about organic food

Once upon a time there was only organic food. It sounds like the beginning of a fairy tale, but times were really different when it came to the origin and quality of food.

In the meantime, organic food has won hearts around the world again – that’s why we decided to write about how it came about, why organic food is so important and how to recognize it.

What is organic food

“Organic” is the name for food produced without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. This food does not contain genetically modified organisms, it has not been treated with radiation or chemical food additives.

Organic food farms are located away from the main polluters of land, air and water, such as factories, highways …

Due to which there was an overproduction of inorganic food

There are more and more of us on the planet and food needs are growing. It is necessary to grow as much food as possible in as little time as possible, the use of pesticides, herbicides, chemicals and genetic modifications is becoming more widespread, and there is a growing “hunger” for profit.

Benefits of organically grown food

Real taste of vegetables, fruits, meat
Better nutritional value
It does not contain antibiotics, pesticides, GMOs
Care for the environment and animals
Organic food is fresher, because it does not contain preservatives
Numerous health benefits

Surely you have noticed a huge difference between new “standard” and organic food. Although organic food does not look perfectly shiny or round, it has both a smell and a far better taste.

How much better is the composition of organically grown food?

In 1998, the journal Alternative Therapies published the results of 34 studies comparing the nutritional composition of organic and conventional foods. According to these analyzes, organic food contains more vitamin C, more minerals and protein. Four years later, an Italian study was published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, concluding that organic food contains significantly more polyphenols and vitamin C in organically produced peaches and pears.
Scientists have found up to 40% more antioxidants and important minerals such as iron and zinc in organically grown fruits and vegetables. Milk from cows fed organic fodder contains up to 60% more antioxidants and significantly higher levels of vitamin E.

How to recognize organic food

You can easily recognize organic food by its small imperfections when it comes to appearance.

There are special sections in supermarkets where so-called “natural” food is sold. Surely you have heard of popular “bio” food stores that sell organically produced food along with food that has a special purpose, for example, food for diabetics, whole grain food.

Foreign countries have been implementing very clearly defined laws on the cultivation and sale of organic food for years. In Serbia, if the product is made in accordance with the standards of organic production and in accordance with legal regulations, the manufacturer or importer must put in a visible place a national sign with a clear inscription – ORGANIC PRODUCT.
